The 𝚿 of Media

At The Memetics Institute we are mainly focussed on ways to map and predict the impact of memetic content. We refer to that special sauce as a “wave function” in a tip of the hat to the complexity of the task of prediction involved. We believe in the value of transcoding, which is the discovery and use of ideas and concepts from one discipline of research in another discipline.

In quantum physics, a wave function is a mathematical description of a quantum state of a particle as a function of momentum, time, position, and spin. The symbol used for a wave function is a Greek letter called psi, 𝚿.

We focus mainly on the memetic content of media, but our analysis is rooted in a deep structuralist framework. We break memetic content down into quanta, assign values similar to those used in the wave function of physics, and plot them in a two-dimensional memetic frame called a master frame. We stack these representations to create The Torus.

The Torus represents the media cycle. There are many different media cycles, so the time component can differ based on the needed analysis. Memetic quanta interact with and influence other quanta in a complex and dialectical way through time. This results in evolution of content and sometimes even the altering of master frames.

Discovering the different values and characteristics of memetic quanta allows us to predict how they will operate in the spacetime of media. This is the Memetic Wave Function or 𝚿 of media.
